Privacy Policy — Babushka

Last updated 8 September 2026

Babushka (“Sorry, Babushka”) is a language-learning app published by Mitch Goulson. This policy explains what the app does and does not do with information.

What changed in this version. Earlier versions of Babushka had no accounts and made no network requests at all. This version offers you an account, so that your streak and your progress survive losing or replacing your phone. You do not have to make one: the app is complete without it, she asks at most twice, and anything you play signed out comes with you if you sign in later. An account is the only reason the app talks to a server at all, and the list below is everything it sends when you have one. You can now sign in with Google as well as with Apple or an email address; what that adds is set out below.

What the app collects

That is the entire list. There is no analytics, no crash reporting, no advertising, no advertising identifier, no third-party trackers, no fingerprinting, and no data broker. We do not sell or share your information with anyone, and nothing here is used to track you across other apps or websites.

Your password

If you make an account with a password, we never see it. It is hashed by our authentication provider before it is stored, and we cannot read it or recover it for you — we can only send you a link to set a new one. Signing in with Apple or Google does not create a password at all.

Who else touches it

The account and the progress above are stored by Supabase, which hosts our database and handles sign-in, on servers in the United States. Supabase processes this data on our instructions only.

If you choose to sign in with Apple or with Google, that company is involved to the extent needed to prove who you are, and it will know that you signed in to this app. Those exchanges are governed by Apple’s privacy policy and Google’s privacy policy, not ours. Choosing an email address and password involves neither of them. Nothing about what you learn, say, practise or score is ever sent to Apple or Google.

What stays on your device

Everything above is also kept on your device, and the app is fully playable with no connection — including the whole lesson path, her voice, and the dictionary. Which language you are currently in and her current name stay on that device and are not sent anywhere. Deleting the app deletes the local copy.

Microphone and speech recognition

Babushka teaches pronunciation, so it needs to hear you say the phrase you are learning. When you tap the microphone button, and only then, the app records what you say and converts it to text using Apple’s own speech recognition built into iOS. It compares that text with the phrase you were practising, shows you which words came out wrong, and then discards it.

We never store your audio. We never store the transcript. Neither is ever sent to us or to Supabase. Depending on your device and settings, Apple’s speech recognition may process audio on Apple’s servers; that processing is governed by Apple’s privacy policy, not ours. The app also works without the microphone — it will simply take your word for it that you said the phrase.

Deleting your account

Open Settings → Your account → Delete my account inside the app. This permanently deletes your account and everything stored under it, immediately and without our involvement — including the name and picture, if you signed in with Google. It cannot be undone. What is on your phone stays on your phone until you delete the app.

How long we keep it

Until you delete your account. We do not keep backups of a deleted account beyond our provider’s routine database backups, which roll off within thirty days.

Your rights

You can see everything we hold about you inside the app — it is your progress, and the app shows all of it. You can correct it by using the app, and delete all of it with the button above. If you would rather ask us, or you want a copy by email, write to the address at the bottom of this page. Depending on where you live you may also have the right to complain to a data protection authority.

Children

Babushka teaches adult language, including profanity, and is not directed at children. The app asks your age on first launch and limits the content it will teach you accordingly. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child has made an account, write to the address below and we will delete it.

Changes

If a future version of the app starts collecting anything not listed above, this page will be updated before that version ships, and the change will be described in the app’s release notes.
